Back of the net, say pubs as they could see an over £100 million boost this summer

This summer, pubs and bars are expected to generate an extra £116m in sales compared to a standard non-tournament summer, based on HSBC UK customer card spend.

Between 11 June and 19 July, pubs and bars are expected to make £367.1m compared to £355.4m in a non-tournament year.

The extra revenue boost is being driven by avid football fans, as well as extended licensing hours in pubs across the country to accommodate the late kick-off times.

HSBC UK is the leading lender to pubs and bars across the country, supporting businesses through different funding packages.

James Sawley, Head of Retail and Leisure at HSBC UK, said: “The UK hospitality sector contributes so much to the UK economy, and major sporting events can provide a timely boost for pubs, bars and venues up and down the country.

We’re focused on backing businesses with the right support and funding options, so that they can make the most of the opportunity.”

ETM Group, which owns several pubs and bars in London, has reported a surge in extra business ahead of this year’s tournament.

Colin Sadler, MD at ETM Group, said: “The buzz around this summer’s football tournament has been incredible, with fans across the city coming together to support teams from around the globe.

We’ve seen record pre-tournament bookings and expect trade to rise by over 50% this summer, helped by the tournament and longer opening hours.

HSBC UK’s day-to- day support has helped us make the most of big sporting moments like this.”
